4D modeling for the east side access project cm009/cm019
The East Side Access project is the largest infrastructure project ever taken on by the MTA. It seeks to re-route the LIRR to Grand Central Terminal to improve travel into Manhattan, ease passenger load at Penn Station, and provide an economic and accessibility boost to developing parts of the city. The project includes work in multiple locations in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx, and will also include 11 miles of tunneling. Schiavone and John Picone are working on the excavation of tunnels in Manhattan and developing additional structures.

EnTech was hired by Schiavone Construction to help substantiate their change order request to the client through the use of a 4D model and simulation. EnTech’s scope included creating 3D models of two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and a crusher based on 2D drawings provided by Schiavone and integrating them with the 3D models of the caverns and tunnels. EnTech developed a 4D timeline in Autodesk Navisworks by linking the project schedule to the 3D model in order to simulate the operation of the TBMs. The simulation video helped Schiavone communicate the project schedule with the MTA.
