3D Laser Survey and Building Information Modeling (BIM) Services – WP- 237 Bowery Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant - Contract BB-61 – Structures and Equipment Main Sewage Pump Upgrades, Queens, New York

The Bowery Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant serves an area of 15,000 acres in northwest Queens, NY. The original plant was designed to provide primary treatment to a fl ow of 40 million gallons/day (MGD) for a population of about 300,000. The expanded plant is designed for the expected 2020 population of 920,000, contributing an average fl ow of 150 MGD. The expanded plant can provide primary treatment for 300 MGD and secondary treatment for 225 MGD.

EnTech as a sub consultant to AECOM’s Design Team, developed a Building Information Model (BIM) for the existing condition and AECOM’s new design of High and Low Level Pumping Stations at Bowery Bay WTP. The scope of this assignment was to use 3D Laser Surveying and BIM to deliver a better construction product. This approach proved to improve effi ciency and quality, lower the total project cost by avoiding unwanted change orders, expedited the construction schedule, and improved and facilitated overall project coordination. In addition, using BIM improved the project communication that played a key role in resolving many environmental, health, and safety (EHS) matters, commissioning; typical post-construction issues identifi ed at early stages of the project, likely before the initial construction phase, when any modifi cations were much less costly and burdensome.
