Success Story:

Real-Time Monitoring in Washington, DC

EnTech led the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring program for the design-build construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, a major new sewer tunnel in Washington, DC. EnTech’s engineers installed and monitored hundreds of instruments to provide real-time settlement, tilt, noise, and vibration monitoring data, and the team developed a notification system to alert stakeholders of any recorded measurements over acceptable limits. The interactive feature seen here displays the instrument types and quantities installed at several critical project locations, such as where the tunnel alignment crossed under rapid transit ROW, pumping stations, and major intersections.

The monitoring program formed an integral part of the design-build process. EnTech worked closely with other members of the design-build team to fine-tune the instrumentation to accommodate the advancing design and f ield conditions. In turn, the data obtained by the monitoring program not only helped maintain the safety of existing structures but also informed the work of the design team.
