A Cube With a View: Innovative New Building Opens at Socrates Sculpture Park

EnTech was the prime CM consultant for the construction of The Cubes, an architecturally innovative, modular building containing educational and administrative spaces.

Services: Construction Management
Location: Queens, NY
Owner: New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR)

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was recently held to celebrate the opening of The Cubes, a new educational and administrative building at Socrates Sculpture Park. EnTech lead CM services for the construction of this New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR) project.

Socrates Sculpture Park, located along the Long Island City waterfront, is one of Queens’ most unique cultural institutions, offering art exhibitions, educational opportunities, and artist residencies. Until now, the 6-acre public park has lacked permanent indoor space, which led the NYCDPR is to undertake the construction of the new 2-story, 2,640-sf building.

The Cubes is constructed of strengthened prefabricated shipping containers, which invoke the park’s industrial roots and its tradition of adaptable reuse. The building will enable the park to expand its programming year-round, while providing improved facilities for artists, educators, students, and visitors.

EnTech, as the prime consultant, coordinated and supervised construction of the new building, as well as improvements to the surrounding site. EnTech’s work included verifying the proper protection of existing trees and park elements and the smooth connection of new construction and existing park features.
