The Bronx Museum of the Arts is undergoing a $21 million renovation, which will create a new main entrance and multi-story lobby at the corner of Grand Concourse and 165th Street—modernizing the 50-year-old building, rebuilding the South Wing’s connection to the North Wing and other interior spaces, and increasing the visibility of art and public programming. EnTech provided civil, geotechnical, and environmental services for this major upgrade.
The firm prepared civil designs necessary for the changes to the building’s façade, entrance, and footprint. The civil team designed reconstructed sidewalks, curbs, and pedestrian ramps, as well as new connections for gas, water, and electric services. To ensure safety during utility work, the team developed partial street and sidewalk closure plans, in addition to erosion and sediment control plans.
The firm’s geotechnical team conducted investigations and site seismic evaluations of the existing foundation and developed engineering recommendations for the new structure’s foundation design, prioritizing the need to minimize disturbance to the existing wings. EnTech prepared support of excavation (SOE) designs and a geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring plan. EnTech’s environmental team planned and executed hazardous materials sampling, including sampling for asbestos- and lead-containing material.
