As the Hudson River’s only crossing for more than 15 miles in either direction, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge—also known as the New Tappan Zee Bridge—is a critical roadway connection for the greater New York metropolitan area. The original cantilever bridge faced frequent congestion following decades of development in surrounding counties. To meet its ridership volumes, the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) undertook a full replacement.
EnTech, as a member of the owner’s engineering team, provided construction inspection, office engineering, document control, and disadvantaged business enterprises (DBE) compliance services for the $3.9 billion design-build project. The scope included twin cable-stayed, 2,300-foot-long main spans upheld by eight tapered towers, steel girder spans, connections to the existing Thruway, ancillary buildings, and maintenance access routes. The new bridge includes eight traffic lanes, dedicated bus lanes, the nation’s longest shared pedestrian and bike path, and space for future installation of a commuter rail between the spans. EnTech developed and administered the project’s document management system, including managing sensitive documents, contractor payments, and submittals and performing quality compliance oversight of project records. The firm additionally performed construction inspection to verify contractor compliance with the design plans and contract specifications.
