The Madison Avenue Bridge, a four-lane swing bridge that connects Madison Avenue in Upper Manhattan with East 138th Street in the Bronx, carries more than 40,000 vehicles over the Harlem River daily. Constructed in 1910, the bridge has undergone previous renovations but needs upgrades to replace nonfunctioning or obsolete parts and bring the bridge up to regulatory standards.
EnTech, in joint venture, is leading REI and environmental services for this New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) project. Mechanical upgrades include the replacement of the bridge’s span drive and machinery. Electrical upgrades include the replacement of the bridge’s control system and limit switches, as well as the fire alarm, intercom, and CCTV systems. Structural upgrades include restoration and replacement of bridge end dams, machinery room improvements, and access improvements for maintenance personnel.
The firm oversees contractor work to ensure compliance with plans and specifications, as well as health, safety, and environmental protocols. EnTech manages inspections during the fabrication, handling, and delivery of various machinery components for the bridge. The team is also performing environmental inspections and is reviewing contractor submittals. EnTech’s REI team implements maintenance and protection of traffic (MPT) plans including marine traffic restrictions.
