Connecting Queens and Manhattan over the East River, the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge is one of New York City’s most heavily trafficked bridges, carrying over 145,500 vehicles, 5,000 cyclists, and 1,900 pedestrians daily. Completed in 1909, the two-level, 3,725-foot cantilever truss bridge had its last deck replacement in 1983. Damage during subsequent resurfacing, combined with increasing traffic demands, has necessitated the replacement of the upper roadway’s deck, superstructure, floor beams, adjacent utilities, and traffic control systems.
EnTech is providing REI services for this New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) project, that involves installing lightweight orthotropic decking. The EnTech team is monitoring contractor operations and performing daily inspections for quality, safety, and compliance with contract documents and specifications. The firm reviews and analyzes change orders, payments, and submittals. The bridge is remaining operational during construction, which is being conducted in two stages. EnTech is implementing maintenance and protection of traffic (MPT) measures, and the team is overseeing the installation and maintenance of traffic signals, sign structures, and pavement markings.
