Socrates Sculpture Park is a unique cultural institution in the Astoria neighborhood offering art exhibitions, educational opportunities, and artist residencies. To remedy the 6-acre public park’s lack of permanent indoor space and expand its year-round programming, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR) undertook the construction of a new 2-story, 2,640-sf building known as The Cubes.
EnTech led CM services for the construction of The Cubes, including programming spaces, administrative offices, restrooms, a small pantry, a 500-sf shaded deck, and exterior site work. The building is constructed of strengthened prefabricated shipping containers, invoking the park’s industrial roots. The firm monitored contractor work for conformance with contract documents and overall design intent. Before construction, EnTech reviewed alternative preliminary designs and made technical recommendations. The team led coordination between the contractor, multidisciplinary design team, NYCDPR, and other stakeholders. EnTech ensured the contractor took proper precautions for the protection of patrons, existing trees, park features, and adjacent facilities.
