Project Spotlight: Floating Pool Lady

In honor of Earth Day, we’re checking in with EnTech’s environmental team, which is busy supporting dozens of projects throughout the five boroughs and across the wider region.

Services Environmental Services
Location Bronx, NY
Owner New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)

Among the team’s current assignments is providing support for the inspection of a unique piece of New York City civic infrastructure: The Floating Pool Lady. This unusual (and unusually named) facility is a half Olympic-size public swimming pool, built into a barge. It is moored at Barretto Point Park, on the Bronx’s East River shoreline, and provides recreational swimming opportunities for the Hunts Point neighborhood and surrounding communities.

EnTech is providing confined space support for a condition inspection of the structure that is identifying any structural deterioration and determining the necessity of any repairs. EnTech prepared a health and safety plan and entry permit for inspection activities in confined spaces under the pool. The team is acting as the confined space attendant on-site to ensure the safety of the inspection team.

The only such floating pool in New York City, the Floating Pool Lady is inspired by the “floating baths” moored on the Hudson River and East River around the turn of the 20th century. Held afloat on pontoons, these historical baths provided the public with places to bathe and to learn to swim.
