As part of a master plan to replace aging water distribution and sewer infrastructure across Queens, the New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) undertook the replacement of unlined cast iron trunk and distribution water mains along 0.3 miles of Cypress Avenue and sections of adjacent streets in the Ridgewood neighborhood. The project additionally upgraded combined storm and sanitary sewers.
EnTech, in joint venture, led REI services. The project alleviated persistent flooding, increased fire protection capabilities, and improved water quality and pressure. Upgrades included: installation of 6,320 lf of trunk main, 7,399 lf of distribution water main, 1,445 lf of basin and house connections, as well as hydrants, catch basins, and manholes; and replacement of 2,577 lf of sewer in various sizes. Roadway reconstruction encompassed over 30,200 sy of resurfacing, 8,900 lf of curb, and over 46,500 sf of driveway and sidewalk.
The REI team monitored construction for quality and compliance with contract and agency specifications, as well as health and safety regulations. The team oversaw vibration and settlement monitoring, and implemented MPT plans. EnTech provided community liaison services and developed solutions to navigate COVID-19 pandemic-related challenges.
EnTech’s work on the project earned an ACEC New York Gold Award in the 2024 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition.
