EnTech served as the prime REI consultant responsible for coordinating and monitoring construction of an $8 million project to apply protective coatings on two bridges carrying Northern Boulevard over the Flushing River, in Queens (NYCDOT project HB1070NB). The fixed-span bridges, erected in 1980, were at risk of corroding, and their steel structures needed extensive cleaning. The project, which was successfully completed last year, helps preserve these important roadway links between the busy Downtown Flushing neighborhood and nearby highways.
The scope of work included the establishment of containment systems and air monitoring systems, abrasive blast cleaning of the steel structures, surface preparation, application of protective coating to COR-TEN weathering steel surfaces, and treatment and disposal of hazardous waste. EnTech REI team monitored contractor operations, managed the project schedule and budget, and led coordination with the local community. The firm’s environmental team provided air quality monitoring and hazardous waste oversight.
EnTech worked with contractors to address potential issues throughout the project lifecycle. The team reviewed shop drawings and submittals, developed construction estimates for incidental repairs and bridge flag repairs, and prepared design modifications as needed in response to field conditions. Thanks in part to the EnTech team’s efforts, construction operations were successfully completed ahead of scheduled completion.
