The AirTrain people mover is critical to the operation of Newark Liberty International Airport, carrying approximately 12 million passengers per year between terminals, parking areas, and a rail station with NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak service. With the current system nearing the end of its useful life, the PANYNJ is undertaking its full replacement along a new 2.5-mile alignment.
EnTech provided civil design and program management services as a member of the preliminary design team for the new AirTrain guideway and stations. The new AirTrain will meet forecasted passenger volumes and offer improved reliability, safety, accessibility, and overall passenger experience.
EnTech’s civil team led the preliminary design for drainage, utility relocation, lighting, construction staging, and work zone traffic controls (WZTC). The team prepared designs for inclusion in design-build bridging documents. Challenges included minimizing conflicts with the dense network of existing underground utilities throughout the guideway alignment.
EnTech additionally provided scope development for the guideway and stations package. The team coordinated technical portions of the request for qualifications (RFQ) and request for proposals (RFP) documents for the design-build procurement, including compiling specifications and relevant PANYNJ standards.
