EnTech Wins ASHE 2020-2021 Project of the Year

The American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) NY Metro chapter has selected the Construction Administration and Inspection for Reconstruction of Upper and Lower Toll Plazas and Southbound Approach at Henry Hudson Bridge led by our own Michael Hershey as the 2020-2021 Project of the Year!

Project Story

The Henry Hudson Bridge opened in 1936, connecting northern Manhattan to the Bronx. Originally built with only one level, the bridge’s design allowed for the construction of a second level if traffic demands increased. The upper level opened within 18 months, carrying northbound traffic, while the lower level carries southbound traffic. This project, which started in 2017, aimed to modernize the Henry Hudson Bridge by rehabilitating the south bound approach upper and lower level roadways, by replacing the last remaining sections of the bridge’s original 1930s-era roadway deck, and by removing the columns and toll islands from the former toll plaza on the lower level roadway. The southbound approach to the bridge was also replaced and roadway lighting on the adjacent segment of the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan, in both the northbound and southbound directions, were upgraded. The renewed roadways will provide safer and smoother traffic flow and an improved driving surface for the 71,500 customers who use the roadway every day for decades to come.

We are extremely proud of our team for all their hard work, and grateful to our client, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, the designer, WSP/AECOM, and the contractor, Restani Construction Corp., for making this project a success.

We would like to especially recognize the team who made this all possible and they are: Arash Shamsian, Patricia Raikos, Robert Mitchell, and Michael Haas who have worked on this project since its early days. We would also like to recognize, Rafael DeSoto of RAD Engineers, whose knowledge and leadership helped us through this complex project.

A special shout-out to Ashkan Kangani, Suzan Sharifan and Kenneth Poje who also contributed to making this award possible.

Lower Roadway Stage 1 Closure

“Pleased and proud of this accomplishment and the recognition. It is a significant achievement for EnTech for such complex project. The Henry Hudson Bridge project is one of a kind, and we have never worked on a project like this. We are proud of, and grateful for, the experience this project has given us. We have a great team here on this project!” The EnTech team

This award recognizes EnTech’s outstanding work on a project that included very complex construction, the need for creativity and innovation, strong community outreach, and an attention to detail and aesthetics. The team of EnTech (WBE) as Prime and RAD Engineers (MBE) as our major subconsultant performed 84% of the work, far exceeding the MTAB&T goal of 30% minority firm participation. This Construction Inspection (CI) assignment, at over $90M, may be the largest ever awarded to a WBE/MBE team in the Metropolitan Area. It is a testament to the progress and success of minority programs put into place by our city and state agencies.
