Increasing Resilience Through Green Infrastructure

Services: Owner’s Representative
Location: Queens, NY
Owner: New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)
Construction Cost: $380 million

It’s Climate Week 2024 in New York City, and events across the city are being held to discuss climate change, with many events addressing possible engineering solutions to the threats climate change poses.

Resilience to climate change and extreme weather is a driving factor in many of EnTech’s projects. To highlight just one, EnTech served as the prime owner’s representative for the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), for the design and construction of thousands of green infrastructure installations. The $380 million program spanned five watershed areas in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Green infrastructure such as bioswales, green strips, infiltration basins, porous concrete, and permeable pavement are critical tools for managing stormwater throughout New York City. These installations collect and filter stormwater at the source, which enhances an area’s resilience to flooding and extreme weather; reduces harmful combined sewer overflows (CSOs); and improves water quality of local waterways. Installations in this NYCEDC program ranged from small bioswales and infiltration basins along right-of-way (ROW), to larger underground installations at city-owned sites such as NYC Parks, playgrounds, and parking lots of housing developments.

EnTech’s work included managing over 20 design and construction contracts, tracking the progress of numerous simultaneous projects, overseeing budgets, facilitating communication among numerous stakeholders, and monitoring installations in the field to verify conformance with contract documents and quality standards.
